Verkamp, age 77 passed away at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday (August 2, 2011) in St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. He was born in Huntingburg, Indiana on December 1, 1933 to John H. and Wilhelmina J. (Schipp) Verkamp. He had two marriages; 1st marriage to Carole Reising June 26, 1958, she preceded him in death on May 1, 1996. 2nd marriage to Charmaine Herr Schneider on June 7, 1997. Surviving are his wife Charmaine, Three daughters, Cathy Fislar and spouse Edward, Indianapolis, IN Christine Lizardi and spouse Carlos, Clearwater, FL Mary Verkamp, Indianapolis, IN Three sons, Tony Verkamp and spouse Shelly, Colorado Springs, CO John Verkamp and spouse Lori, Jasper, IN Mike Verkamp and spouse Shelly, Franklin, IN Two step daughters, Deborah Phelps and spouse Tom, Lafayette, IN Kriste Braunecker and spouse Jim, St. Louis, MO Ten grandchildren and four step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Two sisters, Virlee “Perk” Kreilein and spouse Dennis, Jasper, IN Sr. Mary Ann Verkamp, O.S.B. Convent of the Immaculate Conception, Ferdinand, IN Two brothers, Gilbert Verkamp and spouse Katherine, Jasper, IN Bernard Verkamp, Vincennes, IN Preceding him in death besides his first wife are one sister, Sr. Mary Aquin Verkamp O.S.B. and one brother Francis Verkamp. Mr. Verkamp graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1951 and received his BS degree from Indiana State University, and his Masters from Indiana University . He also served in the Indiana National Guard and was a founding member of the Dubois County Sportsmen’s Club. Mr. Verkamp began his teaching career in 1957 and retired in 1993 after 37 years of teaching for the Greater Jasper High School System. He taught Industrial Arts and also taught drivers education. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church – Eucharist Minister at St. Joseph - Served as a reader at the Providence Home in Jasper - American Legion Post # 147 – Indiana Retired Teachers Association – Jasper Deutscher Verein - Served as Strassenfest Committee Chairperson in 1989 and 1990 – Served as Host of the Jasper Strassenfest 1987 and 1988. Funeral services for Robert Verkamp will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (August 6, 2011) in St. Joseph Catholic Church with entombment to follow in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Becher & Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or to the American Cancer Society.
