Les Stallwood

Dateline Jasper: Leslie “Les” Stallwood age 85 of Jasper passed away at 4:40 A.M. Saturday August 27, 2005 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease at the Heritage House Nursing Center in Jasper. He was born August 22, 1920 in Farnborough England to: George and Minnie (Preece ) Stallwood. He immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 5. After living briefly in Dayton Ohio the family set up permanent residence in Indianapolis. Les graduated from Manual High School and Purdue University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon his graduation from Purdue he entered the US Army and was stationed at Oak Ridge TN. And Los Alamos NM. After being honorably discharged from the Army he began employment in Indianapolis at Allison Division of General Motors where he retired in 1980. He married Martha Becher of Jasper August 30, 1947 for life. In 2001 they moved to Jasper to live out there lives. Les was a charter member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Indianapolis and a current member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. He was one of the founders of All-American Little League and served as its commissioner. Like his father before him, Les was a tedious perfectionist in all of his pursuits. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Ulen Country Club in Lebanon IN. Les was a loving husband, father and a contributing member of our greatest generation. He will be missed by all that knew him. Surviving: his wife Martha “Myrt” Stallwood of Jasper. 2 sons- Geoff Stallwood of Jasper, and George Stallwood of Indianapolis. 1 daughter- Mrs. John (Tracy) Steiner of Hastings Minnesota 1 sister-Alice Anderson of Indianapolis. 8 Grandchildren 1 great Grandhild Preceded in death by 1 brother-Charles Stallwood Visitation will be held from 12:00-8:00 P.M. Monday at the Becher & Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday August 30, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper, the VFW Post 673 will conduct the Military Grave Side Rites. Memorial contributions may be made to:the Carmelites or St. Augustine Nursing Home in Indianapolis.
