(Larry) Backer, age 77 of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 10:23 p.m. on Monday (November 24, 2014) at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper, IN Larry was born on September 9, 1937 in Evansville, Indiana to Dr. Henry G. and Frances (McLaughlin) Backer. He married Mary Ellen Schneider on August 21, 1965 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, IN. He retired after 32 years as a teacher who taught Chemistry, Biology and Math at Holland High School and Southridge High School. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, IN, and the Ferdinand American Legion Post #124. He was a member of the first graduating class of St. Ferdinand High School, where he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He enjoyed playing sheephead, gardening, hunting, fishing, reading, traveling, and spending time with his friends, family and grandchildren. Three Sisters; Sister Phyllis Backer, Medical Missionary Sisters, Philadelphia, PA Mary Jo Uebelhor, Jasper, IN Margaret Backer, Ferdinand, IN Four Brothers; Dr. George (Pete) Backer and his wife Dr. Barbara Backer, LaPorte, IN Henry (Hank) Backer, Ferdinand, IN Thomas Backer and his wife Pam, Erlanger, KY Dr. Joseph Backer and his wife Lucia, McLean, VA Preceding him in death was one sister, Susan Hasenour, and three brothers, John, David and Patrick Backer. Funeral services for Larry Backer will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday (December 1, 2014) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to be held at a later date. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday (November 30, 2014) at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, IN.
