Cindy Hedinger

Cindy Hedinger, age 66, of Tampa, died December 20, 2024, at Advent Health Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Cindy was born on February 12, 1958, in Jasper, Indiana, to William and Mary Ann (Schwinghammer) Hedinger. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her twin sister, Christy Hedinger of Tampa, Florida. Cindy was a 1976 graduate of Jasper High School. She graduated in 1980 from the University of Tampa with a bachelor of science degree. In 1987 Cindy was a charter member of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. She served on the board of directors. The chapter participated in many activities to bring blind and visually impaired awareness to the Tampa Bay area. Every October, which is White Cane Safety Month, the chapter would gather at a busy intersection to bring awareness to the white cane law which is: Any person with a white cane and a red tip always has the right of way. In 1996 Cindy was a founding member of the Blind Support Group that met at the Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind. She was director of activities and helped arrange for visually impaired people in the community to get out and attend Florida Orchestra concerts, plays, and shows at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, museums, and professional sports games in the Tampa Bay area. Cindy arranged for the group to go to Malibu Grand Prix. The visually impaired person drove the go-cart while their seeing buddy told them which way to go. It was a lot of fun for everyone. In 2001 The Blind Support Group incorporated and became YES! of America United for people with all disabilities. Cindy was on the board of directors and continued as activity director. Once a year Cindy and members of YES! would go to Tallahassee to meet with Florida legislators and advocate for legislation to help people with disabilities. In 2007 Cindy received the United Way Volunteer of the Year Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her ongoing volunteer efforts and her commitment to the Tampa community. A memorial service will he held in Tampa, Florida at a later date, and burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Jasper, Indiana.
