Eckert age 88 of Jasper died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday (October 14, 2006) at the St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. He was born in Jasper, Indiana on August 23, 1918 to Joseph and Cecelia (Gehlhausen) Eckert, he married Loretta Knies on November 12, 1942 at St. Celestine Catholic Church, and she preceded him in death on September 29, 2001. Ambrose Eckert was a WWII Army Veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and 5 Battle Stars and served in the European Theatre Operations. He managed the Jasper Knight of Columbus for 10 years and was the administrator of the Dubois County Veterans Service Office for 14 years – received the Outstanding Veterans Service Officer Award for 1994/1995. He served on the Jasper City Council. Past Grand Knight and deputy of the Knight of Columbus in the year of 1949/1950. He also was a Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post # 673 in Jasper; he received the VFW Department of Indiana Jim Butters Post Veterans Service Award in 1993. He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church – V.F.W. Post # 673 and the American Legion Post # 147 in Jasper – Jasper Knight of Columbus. Surviving is 1 son and 3 daughters; Dr. Ron Eckert, Jasper, IN Mrs. Larron (Bev) Luegers Mrs. John (Shari) Krempp both of Jasper, IN Mrs. Terry (Sandy) Ruxer, Cadiz, Ky 13 grandchildren and 5.great grandchildren Preceding him in death besides his wife is one son Paul Eckert and 1 granddaughter, Allison Eckert 1 sister and Four brothers; Mildred Wehr, Leo and Clarence Eckert who died in infancy and Claude and Earl Eckert. Funeral services for Ambrose H. Eckert will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday (October 19, 2006) in St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. V.F.W. Post # 673 in Jasper will conduct Military Grave Side Rites. Prayer Vigil at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday by members of St. Joseph Parish at the funeral home. Friends may call from noon-8:00 p.m. Wednesday (October 18, 2006) at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or to Saint Jude Children Hospital.
